Subject: Unless you have a jet boat, hiking and getting creative with river crossings is the only way to reach the best trout water in Alaska’s Mat-Su Valley. I took this shot of Dane Tudor as he bushwhacked his way to some prime rainbow trout turf just outside Talkeetna, Alaska. Fall is a great time on this area’s streams because they lose their glacial silt and become clear enough to fish. With a little investment of time and energy you can find places where you’ll catch more rainbows, Dolly Varden and grayling than you ever thought possible. And the best reason to fish the Mat-Su during fall? You often find yourself very, very alone.
