A little over a decade ago, vest packs-day packs with a vest or chest-pack front-were scarcely a blip on the equipment radar. Today, they're a fairly hot property, even for a somewhat specialized item. Since vest packs serve the need for more gear capacity, their growth in popularity invites questions. Are more anglers now shouldering a day's worth of necessities and heading off the beaten path to find elbow room or better fishing? Are we spending longer hours on the water? Or-never to be discounted-are we simply hauling around more stuff?
