Have Rod, Will Travel

How many different fisheries can you cover with one rod?

Have Rod Will Travel 3

Well, we aim to find out. Over the next year, we’re putting a Thomas & Thomas Solar 9-foot 7-weight in the hands of a series of anglers, who will treat it to adventures around the country (and likely around the globe).

The Solar is designed for the tropical flats, but it’s equally capable of tossing Clousers for stripers and blues, or winging a popper at a peacock bass. We imagine we’ll convince it to chuck Woolly Buggers on Western trout rivers and Sneaky Petes for largemouth or smallmouth bass on some local pond, even cover risers when the Green Drakes are on. First stop is Hawaii, specifically Oahu, where Chris Santella will probe the flats around Honolulu, knowing any given cast could result in a bonefish north of 15 pounds.

And you can follow along. In conjunction with the experienced travel staff at The Fly Shop, we’re launching a travel e-newsletter that will bring you monthly updates on where our T&T Solar has been, along with all kinds of other fly-fishing-travel tidbits: info about luggage and other travel gear, advisories about new lodges, tips on how to make sure your gear gets to your destination and more.
