Submission Guidelines

Write With Us

Fly Rod & Reel buys only well-written, authoritative articles that capture the excitement of fly-fishing. We want to hear about your bear attack, your 20-mile hike to an alpine lake, the time you almost got arrested poaching bass from the golf course. We leave “kiss-and-tell” and dry, humorless “how-to” stories to the other magazines. If you have a technique or how-to article, ensconce it in a strong narrative framework and send it in.
Length should be around 2,000-to 2,500 words.

Fly-tying articles should be about innovative people, patterns and techniques that make catching fish and tying easier. Excellent fly photographs are particularly important here.

Photo Guidelines

We accept slides and digital photos. Digital images should be TIFFs or hi-res JPEGs. If you are sending us a query please include a color contact sheet of your images. We are always looking for new photo talent and shots from interesting perspectives and unusual locations. Bright red shirts are optional. And if you have an idea for a photo essay, please let us know.

All submissions are on speculation, which means we do not make any promises to buy your article, even if you receive positive feedback to your query (e.g. “Yeah, go ahead and write it and we’ll take a look at it when it is finished.”). We generally pay on acceptance.
